We are please to share Nepal mVAM Bulletin # 6 based on the results of NeKSAP food security monitoring survey conducted in Karnali Province and Mountain Districts of Sudurpaschim Province.
The survey was conducted in June 2019 follow as a pannel design using a multi stage stratified cluster sample. This is the fifth round following a September 2018 round and November 2016 baseline survey

While food commodity markets have largely recovered, the destruction of household food stocks and of rice plantation 35,000+ hectares of rice losses) pose an immediate challenge for food security, and also through the end-of-year harvest period. Food security was also affected by extensive damage to assets, housing and water and sanitation infrastructure.
Heavy rainfall on 11-12 July caused landslides and flooding in 32 Districts across Nepal. Flooding was most severe in 11 Terai districts of Provinces 1 and 2. Extensive damages to assets, housing, water and sanitation infrastructure, food stocks, crop and livestock all have a significant impact on food security in the region.
An estimated 176,800 people’s food security is currently significantly affected as a result of the flooding, of which 79,900 people, or 13,800 households, are deemed to be the most in need of assistance.

A large loss of life and damages to assets, housing, water and sanitation infrastructure, food stocks, crop and livestock all have a significant impact on food security in the region.
An estimated 212,000 people’s food security is significantly affected as a result of the flooding, of which 101,600 people, or 17,400 households, are deemed to be the most in need of assistance.
The final advance estimate of 2019 wheat production was obtained on 10th May, 2019 using CRAFT, the CCAFS Regional Agricultural Forecasting Toolbox (see Methods on page 2). According to CRAFT, the total wheat production in 2019 is forecasted to be 2,003,885 MT, a 2.81 percent increase compared to the production level of 1,949,001 MT in 2018. The expected yield rate of wheat in the country is 2.92 MT per hectare. Furthermore, the forecasted figure is a 6.3 percent increase compared to the average production level of the last five years. The forecast was made based on the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD)’s records of wheat planted area received on 7th May, 2019 (678,354 hectares) and is based on a prediction uncertainty of ±7.5 percent.
The first advance estimate of 2019 wheat production was obtained on 5th April, 2019 using CRAFT, the CCAFS Regional Agricultural Forecasting Toolbox. According to CRAFT, the total wheat production in 2019 is forecasted to be 1,950,946 MT, a 1.13 percent decrease compared to the production level of 1,973,151 MT in 2018. The expected yield rate of wheat in the country is expected to be 2.88 MT per hectare. Furthermore, the forecasted figure is a 3.5 percent increase compared to the average production level of the last five years. The forecast was made based on the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD)’s records of wheat planted area received on 25th March, 2019 (678,354 hectares) and is based on a prediction uncertainty of ±7.5 percent.

We are pleased to share the report, SDGs and Food Insecurity in Karnali: Results from The Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES).
Nearly 7 percent of households in Karnali Province were found to be severely food insecure, and four time that number, either severely, or moderately food insecure.
This household survey was undertaken by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), in close cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD), the National Planning Commission (NPC), the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as part of WFP's support to the Nepal Food Security Monitoring System (NeKSAP).
We are pleased to share the mVAM Bulletin-4 based on the results of NeKSAP food security monitoring survey conducted in Karnali Province and mountain districts of Sudur Paschim Province (Bajura, Bajhang and Darchula).
The household survey was conducted in September 2018 using a multi-stage stratified sampling design, selecting 174 primary sampling units (PSUs): 75 in Karnali hills and 49 each in Karnali and Sudur Paschim mountain areas. A total of 15 households were interviewed in each PSU, using both face to face and telephone interviews. A total of 2029 sampled households were surveyed: 1,124 in Karnali hills, 584 in Karnali mountains and 321 in Sudur Paschim mountains, of which 551 were surveyed by telephone. Moreover, 195 traders from 96 markets were also interviewed regarding the market situation in their area.
